During this year’s annual online themed weekend, we will dive deep into a topic that forms the foundation of everything a horse experiences: the senses.
This weekend is entirely dedicated to understanding how a horse perceives, feels, smells, hears, and organizes its body—both anatomically and functionally. We combine in-depth knowledge with unique visuals and insights that you rarely, if ever, get to see.
We often think we know how a horse sees, hears, or feels. But how much of that knowledge is actually evidence-based? And what does a sense organ really look like on the inside?
During this themed weekend:
- We take an in-depth look at all of the horse’s senses.
- We explore them step by step, one by one.
- And we bring together anatomy, neurology, and functional performance.
A major element of this weekend is a series of unique dissection images that allow us to look quite literally beneath the skin. This reveals how the senses are structured anatomically and how this relates to behavior, perception, and movement.
We move beyond theory alone.
Through the use of dissection material, Zefanja takes you inside the horse’s body, allowing you to see firsthand how all systems are interconnected.
How do horses perceive their environment? What happens inside the body during touch, tension, or movement? And how do nerves continuously transmit information between sensing and responding?
You’ll discover how senses, nerves, muscles, and posture function as one connected whole.
A rare opportunity to learn from people who don’t just explain how it works — they make it visible.
Until March 1, take advantage of our amazing Early Bird price. Pay just €79.95 instead of €99.95 for access to the entire themed weekend.
- 5 online webinars
- 6 months access to the replays
- With exclusive dissection materials
This offer won't return. Don't miss out!
We don’t just examine the structures — we explore how they function.
Here’s what you’ll discover:
- How the horse’s eye is built anatomically — and what this means for vision and perception
- How the nervous system drives the horse’s sense of smell, touch, and hearing
- How the vestibular system and proprioception support body awareness and coordinated movement
- How the senses work together and influence each other
Combining anatomy and function creates a more complete understanding of how a horse experiences the world.
In this online themed weekend, we’ll take you on a journey through all of a horse’s senses—not as isolated elements, but as a single, interconnected system that constantly collects information and converts it into movement, posture, and behavior.
Smell: a sense intimately tied to safety, recognition, and emotion.
Horses often detect their surroundings through scent long before we are even aware.
Vision reveals how horses literally perceive the world differently from us: with a broad field of view, blind spots, and a unique way of processing visual information.
Through hearing, subtle vibrations and sounds enter the body, directly influencing muscle tension and alertness. Taste also plays a role in how a horse explores and evaluates its environment.
A central role is attributed to the sense of touch and proprioception. Touch is therefore not just something a horse feels, but the foundation of body awareness, balance, and coordinated movement.
All of these senses are constantly linked via the nervous system. Everything a horse senses is instantly converted into small or significant changes in posture and movement.
What makes this themed weekend truly unique is how knowledge is brought to life. Across the weekend, a range of experts will share their insights, each focusing on a different sense from their area of expertise.
Zefanja helps you understand the horse from the inside out. Using dissection material, she reveals how the senses are built anatomically and how everything in the body works together. A unique opportunity to see with your own eyes what is usually encountered only in theory.
As an expert in scentwork with horses, Rachaël highlights the power of the sense of smell — how it shapes a horse’s perception, information gathering, and understanding of its environment. Her webinar places this sense at the heart of the horse’s experiential world.
How do horses perceive the world? Marianne shows how the sense of sight plays a key role in how horses experience and understand their environment. By focusing on the eyes and visual perception, deeper insights emerge into behaviour, reactions, and movement.
Thirza, an international expert in equine movement, bridges science and training to enhance performance. Her session focuses on touch and proprioception — the body awareness that helps a horse know where its body is, how balance is achieved, and how movement becomes smooth and functional.
How does a horse perceive the world through sound? Dr. Gerald Fritz Schusser shares his extensive expertise on equine hearing, shedding light on what horses can truly hear. By taking a closer look at the auditory system and hearing disorders in horses, he provides insights that are seldom highlighted.
This weekend is meant for everyone who:
- wants to look beyond behaviour alone
- is looking to deepen their understanding of anatomy and neurology
- seeks a deeper understanding of how horses perceive and experience the world
- is eager to understand how the horse’s senses actually work
Whether you’re a professional or a passionate horse enthusiast, this weekend offers knowledge that will permanently deepen your understanding of the horse.
Reviews
"Thank you Zefanja for this fab week-end. It is a lot of information to process but it was great to have this opportunity to listen to you all experts"
"Het was weer een bijzonder interessant topic. Ik was zo benieuwd naar de presentaties over melanomen en over huidherstel en wauw. Het bracht me veel bevestiging van wat ik zie en opmerk, maar ook veel nieuwe stof om over na te denken. Leuk om de wetenschap erachter mee te hebben.
Thanks!!! Top top top, once again."
"Happy life is good health and a bad memory 😍
Loved this webinar in more ways than one.
Educational
Inspirational"
"Thank you so much for this amazing generous informative set of lectures. Very helpful, super interesting."
"A fascinating and very engaging presentation — the time just flew by! I learned so much, for example, how the gut microbiome develops early on, and if it doesn’t form correctly, it can’t be fully corrected later, meaning it must be managed lifelong."
"Loved loved loved this one🤩 So many things to take away from this, Nina gave so many clear images and explanations and really brilliant practical tips to take with you."
"This webinar is a must-watch for any owner of a grey or diluted horse. I’ve had several cases where I showed an owner melanomas under the tail, and they didn’t even know they were there or that more had developed. A serious topic, but incredibly valuable!"
